Take advantage of these tips to stay safe and healthy this autumn
Each season presents unique challenges when it comes to your family’s health and safety. Use these tips to have a happy and lively autumn.
While summer is over, you should not just resort to your couch. Fall weather can be perfect for exploring the great outdoors. Take your family for a walk or bike ride through the woods to appreciate beautiful foliage, pick apples and pumpkins at a local farm, or get everyone involved with yard work by making games out of collecting leaves, branches and rocks. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended using sunscreen and insect repellant while enjoying these activities to ensure a safe and active experience. The CDC recommended that children stay active for at least one hour per day, so once the air gets colder, find fun activities to do inside like high energy games of charades or dancing to music.
Eat seasonal produce
Plenty of fruits and vegetables are ripe during the fall months, so take advantage of them using healthy recipes. Real Simple recommended using apples, butternut squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, pears and mushrooms to make your meals nutritious and delicious.
Be proactive about the flu
Flu season will be here before you know it, so make sure you are taking everyday steps to protect yourself and your family. Wash your hands regularly and carry around an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Be on top of cleaning commonly used surfaces, such as tabletops and telephones, since they can be instrumental in spreading germs. If you start to feel under the weather, make sure you stay home and get plenty of rest. Use a humidifier to ease symptoms such as congestion and sinus pain.
