Wall fans add layer of safety around kids and pets
Kids are no different from their parents when it comes to staying cool in summer – they want to be comfortable when they’re playing in the family room and sleep undisturbed during hot nights. But with children around, parents need to balance the need for cooling off their homes with keeping curious kids from touching their electric fans.
Safety and accessibility are important to consider when there are little children in the same space as fans. That’s when having the units mounted high on the wall and out of reach is necessary. Some fans are designed for wall installations, but many units are instantly transformed by mounting them on brackets. Not only do they save space on surfaces and floors, but they’re also easy to assemble for wall use.
Wall models have tilting heads that can be faced in different directions with either an oscillated or directional air flow. Oscillation provides a more widespread cooling path, but for directed air, tilted heads can be locked in place to cool off a particular spot.
Having pedestal fans well-positioned around the house will help families make the most of cross breezes from outside and circulated air-conditioning inside. Many wall fans are high-velocity models that can create a powerful breeze that will stretch to all parts of a room.
Features of wall fans
Similar to other fans, wall units have different speeds, quiet operation and a place to wrap the cord on the back of the fan when not in use. Among the safety features are both rotary-style and pull cord controls as well as fused safety plugs and fan grills that snap together tightly.
One model by Lasko, the 6-inch clip fan, isn’t strictly a wall model, but it serves the same function. It can be clipped onto a shelf high above a desk or other furnishings, providing the same safe distance from children and pets. The spring-loaded clip has a strong grip but won’t leave marks on the surface where it’s attached.
It’s also easy to spread the cool air around a room with adjustable tilting capability and a 360-degree pivoting fan head that allows you to have a breeze directed in any direction. For those who want to position the clip fan onto a wall, there’s an option to attach it with a simple keyhole mount.
