Thanksgiving Reimagined: Ideas for Celebrating This Year
Ways to Prepare your Home for Thanksgiving This Year
This year, for most of us, Thanksgiving is going to look and feel different. Though many of us won’t be able to gather with our friends and family as we normally would, there are still ways we can make the holiday feel special.
Decorate & Plan the Menu
It might be just your immediate family around the table this year, but you can still decorate to make your gathering feel festive. Break out the family favorites, like the hand turkeys from your childhood or the ceramic cornucopia. Go ahead, use the fancy napkins or the special dinnerware — small things can help everyone get into the spirit. If you have children in your home, encourage them to be an important part of Thanksgiving preparation by creating some of the decorations and adding personal touches to their seats at the table.
If the traditional turkey and all the fixings menu doesn’t make sense for a smaller gathering, consider mixing up the menu this year. Maybe each family member selects their most favorite side dish and the whole family can enjoy a “feast of favorites” this year. Perhaps you opt for keeping it really simple and order a special take-out meal from a local restaurant. If you want to downsize a regular Thanksgiving dinner, try substituting Cornish game hens instead of a turkey. There are so many options available, including some take-out shops offering a fun “gobbler” sandwich, which is usually a turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce – delicious!
Go ahead and enjoy the fresh air! This might be the year to go on that family hike or throw the football around the backyard. Not only will some exercise and fresh air help you make room for dinner or help digest afterwards, it can give you an opportunity to explore the neighborhood, check out the foliage or go on a new adventure. If you’ll encounter people from outside of your household while you’re out and about, practice good safety by maintaining distance and wearing a mask.
Clean the Air
It’s important to ensure that you’ve optimized the indoors for comfort and health. If you’re looking for a way to purify the air in your living space, an air purifier makes an appealing option. There are true HEPA air cleaners that will filter out impurities and irritants including dust, allergens, and pet hairs, as well as drawing out the smell of smoke or cooking odors. With sleek, streamlined 2-filter and 3-filter air purifiers for any room in your home, as well as small, portable desktop air purifiers that are ideal for home offices and smaller rooms, you’ll find plenty of ways to cleanse the air around you with our selection.
You’re probably now an expert at setting up virtual meetings or social video calls on any number of video meeting platforms. This Thanksgiving, get online and connect with your extended family who are unable to join in person. A virtual dinner together can feel fun and special… and will definitely be memorable. Everyone can share a favorite holiday memory, tell a funny story and make plans for how you’ll spend time together next year. You could also play a game of virtual charades, Mad Libs™, or one of these 16 other suggestions from Marie Claire magazine. Just don’t forget to pre-plan and help technically-challenged friends and family members so they can join the fun, too! This year presents an amazing opportunity to connect with others in new and creative ways.
After Thanksgiving Dinner, curl up on the couch under a blanket and watch movies, play games, read a good book or daily news. Stay warm with a space heater. No matter if you’re in the family room, dining room or kitchen, customize your space to keep you and your loved ones safe and warm. Lasko offers a variety of heaters in all shapes and sizes to make cold winter days comfortable. Live in a warmer climate or is your house feeling a bit hot from all-day cooking? Try a window fan, tower fan or other portable fan positioned around your home to move the air and allow everyone to feel the breeze.
It is all too easy to let the stress take over around the holidays, especially if you are missing in-person gatherings with friends and family. However, it is important not to lose sight of the real meaning of Thanksgiving. This year looks and feels different, but it’s comforting to remember that we’re not alone.
